The Spirit of an organization
An effective organization runs on the spirit and mood which has been set. Here are a few tips on how to set up team spirit so as to encourage and optimize the performance of your team.
And it is you, spirit–with will and energy, and virtue and purity–that I want, not alone with your brittle frame.
If you have the privilege to run an organization or a small part of it autonomously, it’s a great place to be.
You can actually test all your management skills freely, improve on them every day and find out their effectiveness.
What if you are not? What if you are limited to a very small place to show your individuality, while the rest is guided by corporate standards, and ruled with an iron hand? Well, do not despair.
That place, no matter how small can be built to suit the best possible work environment. If you run an office, that’s your place to build, if you supervise two people, those two people are yours to motivate, if you work in your own cubicle having no powers over anyone whatsoever, then that cubicle is your professional world. I will show you how to build the best working environment for yourself or your juniors, so that people give their best for you.
Tip 1: Withhold the spirit to run your Organization
Look at the signage on the right posted up.
I run a ship and this one is posted on my Elevator wall. It’s a simple concept, but it’s important to let people know what this place believes in. It gives people a meaning to their existence apart from earning money. If you can effectively bring people to believe in the purpose of the jobs they are doing, no matter how small, you have done it ! What I mean is, it should not just be a place to spend the day working meaninglessly, on a dead-end job, waiting for the clock to turn to five. If the people are motivated to really do their tiny bit carefully and meticulously, your job then becomes very easy.
When I said “Withhold the spirit of your organization”, I did not mean the technical Objectives and policies of an organization required by ISO Standards. That’s probably already known and shown to all, and probably also posted up in places. I mean your own positive beliefs in your employees must reflect in the workplace. They can be such quotes, or other things.
Use your creativity!!!
For example, you could put up a Photo frame where a quotation is put up every morning. It should not be one man’s job to put it up, that becomes tedious and boring, everyone can contribute, and each day a different person can change the quote of the day. That can even be a topic of discussion between them.
We all know that money is one of the highest motivators. But financial incentives may not be in your hand. Use your creativity to imagine what can be improved over and above the existing system. A change will more often than not, be welcome.
Successful organizations run on people, not on policies and memorandums.
Get into their minds and you can work miracles.
